We Are Warriors

In almost every movie you see now, especially anything action packed, there’s always a force of good who faces opposition. There’s always the bad guy. That bad guy. The one so bad, so evil, you almost cannot believe that there are people who are like that.

In real life, it’s no different. There’s always someone or something that opposes you. It’s the classic good versus evil scenario. As Christians living in a broken world full of evil, it should come as no surprise that we will have to fight it. We stand out. If we are living how a Christian should, we will be a light that shines in the darkness, a city on a hill, a powerful aroma that follows wherever we go. Evil is attracted to fight the good, and we are not exempt.

“Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have confessed so well before many witnesses.” 1 Timothy 6:12 NLT

So we know we are called to fight, but what exactly are we fighting against?

“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5 NIV

“Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.” Ephesians 6:11-13 NLT

It goes on in Ephesians in verses 14-17 to explain what the armor of God is: belt of truth, breastplate of righteousness, shoes of peace, shield of faith, helmet of salvation, and sword of the Spirit (God’s Word). These are things that hold power, that cannot be destroyed.

Our fight isn’t against man like in all the movies. Rather, our fight is against evil and demons and Satan and all his tricks to destroy us. The fight is against lies and horrors, against immoral lifestyles and temptations, against sin and death. It’s a spiritual and mental battle unseen to the physical world. But we do not have to fight alone.

“The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you,” Deuteronomy 1:30a NIV

“You shall not fear them, for it is the LORD your God who fights for you.” Deuteronomy 3:22 ESV

“For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:4 NIV

” ‘They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you,’ declares the LORD, ‘to deliver you.’ ” Jeremiah 1:19 ESV

Our God is a Warrior. He fights for us. He protects and delivers us from our enemies. He will not let us be overtaken but instead gives us the power to overcome them.

“With God we will gain the victory, and He will trample down our enemies.” Psalm 60:12 NIV

“I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 NIV

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Romans 8:37 ESV

As those who believe in God, who have the Holy Spirit living in us, we have been given the same power over evil that He has. He has already defeated Satan and his demons, all the lies and troubles he’ll bring our way, so we too can declare victory over it!

As His heirs, we can confidently say that we cannot be overtaken by evil because it has already been defeated by Christ’s death on the cross.

Christ’s death and resurrection was a battle against the power of evil, but with Him being infinitely holy, evil could not hold it’s grasp on Him. Since He has dominion over everything, evil never had a chance of winning.

“But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him.” Act 2:24 NIV

“Now He is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else–not only in this world but also in the world to come.” Ephesians 1:21 NLT

“For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith.” 1 John 5:4 ESV

I don’t know what battle you are fighting. I don’t know how long you’ve been in it. But this I do know: it will not last forever and you will win. You are a warrior, you have been given the strength and weapons to defeat it. You have been empowered by the victorious risen Savior to overcome every obstacle, every trial, every temptation, every lie, every attack from Satan.

“God, who foresaw your tribulation, has specially armed you to go through it, not without pain, but without stain.” CS Lewis

Our battles at times will be difficult. They will hurt. We will get exhausted. But they will not destroy us. Christ died to win so we wouldn’t have to. I mean, we couldn’t win by our deaths anyways. Only the sacrifice of the only Holy One could do that. But in His death and through His resurrection, we have won. We may have to fight here on earth, in our minds and with our speech, but we know that we are on the winning side. The day Christ comes back to bring His followers home to Heaven, the day that Satan is thrown into the pit, those are the days when the battle has officially ended for the devil. Satan has no power to defeat God. He has no power to defeat us. He will still try to attack us, to discourage and beat us down as much as possible, but one day he no longer will have the chance to do so.

We have been made victorious warriors in Christ Jesus. We only fight now for our sanctification.
