Ever just get tired? Ever get so worn down from all the opposition you wish they would just back off a little bit? Ever hope that the fight you feel like you’re always fighting would just abruptly end and you’d be the victor?
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but as long as you are alive here on this earth, in this imperfect world, you will be in a battle. But, I am also the bearer of good news – if you are a believer in the living God Christ Jesus, you’ve already won. Say what?! You might be thinking, “if I’ve already won, why am I still fighting?” Great question.
Well, the thing is, Satan still thinks he has a chance. Poor guy. Actually – no, not poor guy. He deserves everything that’s coming, (read Revelation 20) but that’s not the point of this. The point is, we have victory over everything opposing God (take a look at We Are Warriors), but we still live in an imperfect world. Just because God defeated all of evil when Christ died and rose again didn’t mean that the world suddenly became perfect. We will always have opposition, always have a continual battle, until the day we die or Christ comes back for the church.
Our battle will be against sin. It will be against the schemes and lies of the devil. We will have to fight to remain pure and pursue godliness. We will have to battle against the tricks of Satan; the lies he wants us to believe so we stop fighting. He knows he’s lost, and lost big. But does that mean he won’t wreck havoc in this world? To try to destroy Christians and the hope we have to offer by discrediting us and wooing us into temptation? As uncreative as Satan is, he will use every trick he has to keep us from being a light in this world. He knows your soft spots and susceptibilities. He knows what lies you’d believe and what always looks good to you. This is your continual battle.
I know you’re going to want to wave your white flag at times, raise your hands up for a moment of respite to catch your breath, but guess what? The enemy doesn’t play easy and he certainly doesn’t fight like a pansy. He will not give you a chance to regain strength. When he sees you at your weakest, at your most vulnerable, that is when he will attack harder than you thought. (Honestly though, I cannot tell you how many times I wish Satan were tangibly in front of me so I could sucker punch the heck out of his face, but then again, I’m not so sure I want to look into those devilish eyes.)
But never forget this: though your fight is constant, though your flesh grows weak and your spirit frail, it is by God’s strength alone that you can overcome your opposition because He has already defeated all our enemies.
“For the LORD your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” Deuteronomy 20:4 NIV
“The LORD your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves.” Zephaniah 3:17a NIV
” ‘They will fight against you, but they shall not prevail against you, for I am with you,’ declares the LORD, ‘to deliver you.’ ” Jeremiah 1:19 ESV
God has never left your side. He has His army of angels waging war over lost souls. He has His guardian angels surrounding you in a holy blockade. He Himself fights for you. He will give you all the strength and endurance needed to continue on as you daily battle for godliness.
“With God we will gain the victory, and He will trample down our enemies.” Psalm 60:12 NIV
“For God says, ‘I will break the strength of the wicked, but I will increase the power of the godly.’ ” Psalm 75:10 NLT
“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.” Romans 8:37 ESV
If you feel weak, rely on God as your strength. If you’re fearful, know God has already won. If you feel like you’re fighting alone, remember God has never left your side.
“Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.” Ephesians 6:17 NLT
“I write to you, fathers [and mothers], because you know Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men [and women], because you are strong, and the Word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.” 1 John 2:14 ESV
With your fight now, the best way to combat any lie, any scheme, any temptation, is by the Word of our victorious Savior. He equips you in every fashion; giving you His strength for your heart and His Word as the sword for your mind. Surrounding yourself with and meditating on His Word helps keep you prepared to fight whatever ungodly thing that arises against you.
This battle against Satan and his plans is fleeting; it will only last while you’re living and breathing this world’s air. Some days may be easier than others but remember, no matter your battle, no matter what leverage Satan thinks he has over you, it has been won. God has won. God lives in you. You are on the winning side, being empowered with the great victory God possesses. Find hope to persevere in knowing that truth; that no matter how hard Satan tries, he will never win.
